I Don't Want To Believe

from Little Ease by Maycomb

lyrics

Where did it all go wrong? I guess only you know
What of the spoils of youth? Where did they all go?
I tried to make the best of a bad time and learnt that time waits for no one
If I admit I’m wrong, crawl back on all fours, am I the prodigal son or just a lost cause?
Is this a test of endurance or just a waste of potential?

‘Cause it’s been a long time since I passed the point of no return
There’s no going back
I’m full of remorse, I’m on a dead end track
I’ve tried to leave before, I keep coming back

And on a road like this, the progress is slow
Am I a fool or a saint for holding out hope when my ideals are a mess of naive repose, and time waits for no one?

There was a lesson to life, now how did that go?
I swear it’s something like ‘you reap what you sow’, but in a landscape of teeming potential I chose a desert where nothing grows

And it’s been a long time since I passed the point of no return
There’s no going back
I’m full of remorse, I’m on a dead end track
I’ve tried to leave before, I keep coming back

Every failure is another stone on the mountain of my past
And I know what’s done is done, but I can’t forgive myself
I made a private cell, and I built the walls so well:
I never came close to feeling it was anything else
